In an effort to raise public awareness of air quality, the Gaston MPO teamed up with NC Air Awareness (a division of the NC Dept of Environment & Natural Resources) and the Gastonia Police Dept to hold 2 gas cap checks on July 14 and 15, 2009 at the Gastonia Farmers Market. Volunteers tested 454 vehicles and replaced 30 caps!
Gas cap checks test caps to ensure they don't leak; leaky caps allow gas to evaporate from the tank, contributing to air pollution and wasting up to 30 gallons of gasoline annually.
